The base images used to mint NFTs are period accurate to 1914, but the storylines are unconstrained by the realities of days gone by — time travel, sci-fi and fantasy-themed events, and revised interpretations of the past are all parts of the Cryptonville narrative. The early 1900s yielded electrifying economic, social and technological change, affording recent immigrants and entrepreneurs unprecedented opportunities to thrive in the United States. But that period was also plagued by racism and inequality; decades of mass immigration created a fierce backlash, and nativism was rampant. Cryptonville is my attempt to create the world I wish had existed in 1914. The project doesn’t shy away from social issues of the time, but exemplifies what could have been if the nation’s better angels had prevailed from the start.
