Indonesian musical instrument with wooden or metal plates horizontally mounted on a stand. The instrument is played with two wooden sticks with wrapping wound on the end of each. The sound produced is loud and sharp. Gambang kayu is one of the basic instruments in the gamelan orchestra. It is also played in the Javanese shadow puppet theater.
